A Successful Dialogue on Geopolitics and its Global Impact

Recently, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) hosted a thought-provoking lecture titled “Malaysia in International Relations: The Geopolitical Dimensions.”

Aimed at exploring Malaysia’s strategic position in global affairs and the broader impact of geopolitics on everyday life, the lecture featured Prof Dr Kuik Cheng Chwee, Professor of International Relations.

The lecture drew a diverse audience of students from various academic backgrounds, fostering an engaging discussion that provided valuable insights into the complex ways geopolitical dynamics influence national policies, international relations, and the broader global landscape.

The Impact of Geopolitics on everyday Life

For the first part of the lecture, Prof Kuik emphasised the far-reaching effects of geopolitical forces, delivering a compelling message.

“You might not be interested in geopolitics, but, geopolitics has an interest in you.”

This statement resonated strongly with students, reinforcing the idea that global events and political shifts have tangible consequences on individual lives and national policies.

On top of that, he elaborated on how economic decisions, security concerns, and diplomatic relations are all interconnected, shaping the stability and prosperity of nations.

ASEAN being an Essential Institution

For the second part of the lecture, Prof Kuik described the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as an essential institution, highlighting its critical contributions to regional stability, economic cooperation, and diplomatic engagement among its member states.

The discussion underscored ASEAN’s role in fostering cooperation and maintaining peace in Southeast Asia despite its challenges.

Also, by examining key geopolitical events, he illustrated how ASEAN continues to navigate power dynamics among major global players, while striving to uphold the interests of its member states.

Malaysia’s Leadership as ASEAN Chair in 2025

The final part of the lecture highlighted Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair in 2025, a position that presents both opportunities and responsibilities.

Prof Kuik drew parallels to past successes, such as the establishment of ASEAN Plus 3 and the East Asia Summit, illustrating how Malaysia can shape regional policies and strengthen international partnerships.

Additionally, he emphasised that Malaysia’s leadership will be crucial in addressing pressing regional challenges, including economic integration, security cooperation, and climate change.

“By leveraging its diplomatic experience and strategic position, Malaysia has the potential to enhance ASEAN’s global influence and reinforce its role as a key player in international affairs.”
